Ferreting with Sten
Today I took Sten, the Suburban Bushwacker, ferreting (see my earlier post for what that's all about). I think he enjoyed it! We caught three in all - one in a purse net, and the other two dug out with the aid of the Deben Ferret Finder 3 - a fine piece of kit.
Absolutely fascinating. No one does anything like it in the U.S., because cottontails don't dig warrens. I kept waiting for the flash of a white tail and the crack of the shotgun...
Wow! You know, I've raised domestic rabbits and I'd be scared to pull them out of holes like that, for fear of getting a couple nasty incisors buried in my hand.
I'm also fascinated by kill technique. My family always used lead pipes, and I'm still emotionally scarred by the sight of my mom's first rabbit slaughter, in which she brought the pipe down with precious little force, resulting in some really high-pitched rabbit screams.
OK, I'm not really scarred, but I thought it sounded good.

Very cool, Sten!
