Out early this morning with Richard Shelton and his lovely old Tolley 8-bore. Saw a few duck but shot none. Back for a hearty fried breakfast!

I second that! I want to hear about your duck hunting! It's been more than two weeks since I brought home a duck, and it'll be eight months more before I can. Must ... have ... vicarious ... thrills!
EIGHT-BORE?!?!? Do you mean an 8-gauge shotgun? Holy crap. 1) Those have been illegal in the United States for nearly a century, and 2) I can only imagine the vicious recoil that mule gives. Yikes.
Yup, an 8 gauge shotgun! Close-up here. He loads his own black powder ammo for it - there's an article coming up in a future issue of the magazine, not sure what issue yet.
There's a long tradition of using big-bore shotguns for wildfowling in the UK; some guys even use a 4-bore! There's an annual big-bore championship where they compete on a sporting clays layout with those huge guns!
The day I took the photos, we went down to the shore before dawn and waited in the rocks to see what would come by. It's really a goose gun, but it wasn't the best spot for geese. Richard fired at a mallard flighting along the shoreline, but the gun isn't well suited to fast birds like that and he missed behind.
